About Practising Leadership

There comes a point in a senior legal career when being an excellent lawyer is only part of what’s required.

The questions become broader. How do you lead well when the pressure keeps increasing? What are you becoming known for? How do you build influence, make deliberate career decisions and create space for a life beyond the work? Where are you heading, and is your career still giving you what you want from it?

Practising Leadership is a Sunday letter for senior lawyers navigating leadership, ambition, responsibility, progression and what comes next. Each week, I explore one thoughtful idea to help you see something more clearly, think differently about a situation you’re facing or find language for something you’ve understood instinctively for a while without ever quite putting it into words.

Each edition starts with something recognisable from working life in law: a conversation, an observation, a decision, a tension or one of those thoughts that tends to surface when the working week finally goes quiet.

About Amanda

I’ve contributed to partner appointment decisions, giving me first-hand insight into how senior lawyers are assessed when progression and partnership decisions are made.

I’m also a UK-qualified solicitor who’s spent more than 25 years in and around the legal profession. My career has spanned legal practice, legal recruitment, learning and development, training, mentoring and coaching, including designing and leading development programmes for senior lawyers.

Today, I work closely with senior lawyers and legal leaders as they navigate progression, partnership, greater responsibility and the transitions that come with all three.

Practising Leadership draws on that experience, together with the conversations I have every week about what senior legal careers actually demand, professionally and personally.

If you’d value a thoughtful letter about leadership and working life in law each Sunday, I’d be glad to have you with me.
